The first time I ever received a lanyard was when I went to summer camp as a kid. It was used to hold my ID badge, something I needed to get into all of the camp activity areas, not to mention the lunch room. We were allowed to decorate and modify both our lanyards and our badges, and since my lanyard was yellow I put big green stripes on it. I’d always been a fan of the Packers, and I held onto it. The nylon lanyard was intended to be sturdy enough to last an entire summer, but it’s been with me for years now, and it currently protects my camera from being dropped down stairs or falling off a ledge, as was the fate of my most previous camera.
Without realizing it, I’ve actually been using a lot of lanyards over the years. And not just with ID badges and cameras, either. All of my USB drives have lanyards, as do many of my small electronics, and the much hyped “Wii Wist Strap” on my Nintendo Wii is, in fact, just an adjustable lanyard. Lanyards have protected many of my small devices from being dropped, thrown or forgotten, and many companies have realized the value of such. My current employer provided me with a lanyard with the company logo for my ID badge to get into the building, and several of the small businesses I go to have given me promotional lanyards.
